From the first printing of Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr’s New General Atlas, published for only the first few months of 1860. It’s not known just how many copies were printed of this now rare atlas, but examples of its various maps are extremely hard to locate. Maps from the first printing differ from the second issue later that year by the first-state maps bearing the plate number inside the map frame This map of Georgia and Alabama, with original vivid hand-coloring applied at the time of publishing, gives a good representation of what the states were like leading up to the Civil War. Railroad lines are depicted quite prominently—they were the principal highways in those days. Towns, rivers, islands, inlets and other coastal features are shown. The early border version is darker and finer than later editions. Tiny spot at extreme left paper edge. Minor toning at edges. 10.75 x 13.25
