Description
Dogon Nommo Figure - Aboriginal Indigenous Art - The Nommo or Nummo are primordial ancestral spirits in Dogon religion and cosmogony (sometimes referred to as demi deities) venerated by the Dogon people of Mali. This wooden figure of ritualware measures 55"x 10"x 10". Dogon religion and creation mythology says that Nommo was the first living creature created by the sky god Amma. Shortly after his creation, Nommo underwent a transformation and multiplied into four pairs of twins. In this example we can see two heads atop a females torso. Scarification and tribal identification marks can be seen on face and torso, with arms held high over head. Beaded anklets are around each foot and a piece of fabric, covering genitalia, is held up by a "belt" of beads. Item comes from the collection of Timothy Koock. Ships from Austin, Tx.
