North Africa Wooden Fetish - 19th Century Aboriginal Indigenous Art- - Once ritualware for the Indiginous people of North Africa, Africa. The carved wooden figures of human beings and animals which are so typical of the art of equatorial Africa, especially in the interior and the west, are commonly grouped under the name of fetishes. Their purposes are very varied; bringing fertility, rain, good harvests; warding off disease, natural calamities, evil spirits; helping with social decisions and judgments; commemorating important events, making political statements.
