STERLING MOUNTED TORTOISESHELL GLASS CASE WITH CHATELAINE AND SPECTACLES
London, 1894, with makers hallmark of "MBA" to both the glass case and chatelaine hook. The glass case mounted with a sterling monogram to one side, holding a pair of oval framed spectacles.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
