COLLECTION OF FOUR SPECTACLES
One likely English of full tortoiseshell wig glasses with petite circular lenses in frog mouth case, circa 1780. Another silver finished with octagonal lenses, crank bridge and straight temples in tin case, circa 1870. Another gold finished with oval lenses, scroll bridge and sliding temples in lacquered case, circa 1890. The last with gold finish, oval lenses, scroll bridge and straight temples.

From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.

Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
