Spectacles & Other Vision Aids

Dr. J. William Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. Spectacles became a lifelong passion for Bill, as his friends knew him, largely influenced by his father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, Bill often frequented the well-known shop of respected antique dealer, Henry Stern, as he built his collection. Optical devices from Bill's collection have found homes in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Selkirk is pleased to offer this single-owner collection of over 300 spectacles, opera glasses, glasses cases, and other optical accessories meticulously curated by Dr. Rosenthal. This collection featured in his book "Spectacles and Other Vision Aids: A History and Guide to Collecting", encapsulates the rich history of optical instruments and their influence as a bridge between science and fashion.
