Item Details
Description
This is an incredible antique sterling silver chatelaine with quasi religious appendages, circa 1888. This piece is very well marked. It contains the maker’s mark for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd., the stamp for Birmingham, England and the date letter for 1888. S. Blanckensee & Son first started in Bristol in 1826 before moving to Birmingham in 1863. Featured in this piece is an angelic motif. There are joyous cherubs gathering grapes and drinking their nectar. There are three parts to this piece—there is one main bust, on the back of which are the hall marks, that contain the chains that attach to the assortment of charms and objects. In the middle is another bust of angels dancing and collecting fruit. Finally, there is one smaller scene of a cherub reclining. Incredibly, all the chains are original to the chatelaine and are individually marked with the lion passant for England. The pieces hanging from the chatelaine are a collection of quasi religious appendages.

This is a stunning momento mori sterling silver skull figural charm. This piece is approximately 1 1/2 inches tall. Momento mori is a Latin expression for “remember you have to die”. In art, it remains a symbolic reminder of mortality. This piece is unmarked but test as sterling silver. It also opens up at the jaw.

This piece dates from 1884-1888.

The history of Mate dates back to at least the mid 17th century. However, it was rediscovered when production became industrialized by 1900. To this day, Argentina remains the primary consumer and producer of Yerba Mate. Drinking Mate is a highly ritualized affair in South America. Mate is served in a gourd with hot water and a metal straw with a filter at the base of it known as a bomba. Even today, Mate remains the national drink of Argentina. This is a stunning antique Mate gourd made of silver with 18kt gold triangles. This traditional Yerba Mate chalice or gourd with three legs stands approximately 2 1/2 inches tall.

This is a beautiful antique perfume clutch or holy water container. Featured on this piece is an angelic motif. There are two angel busts on either side of the container with links stemming from their heads that attach to the rest of the piece. Also included in this piece is a chain attached to the cap so it cannot be lost. Standing, this piece is a little over 2 1/2 inches tall.

In total, this piece weighs approximately 288.5 grams, or 9.27 troy ounces. From the tip to the lowest hanging charm this piece is approximately 11 inches long.

In its original form a châtelain (meaning “lady of the castle” in French) was a belt hook worn, by the lady of the castle, that contained the keys of the castle. This is a primary example of a piece of jewelry that found its origin in the duties of everyday life. Years later, chatelaines were used to sport accessories. By this time, chatelaines were not just reserved for women. Men would don them and have suspended items such as a watch or a small pocket knife. Yet, chatelains remained particularly popular with women as their clothing did not have pockets from the 17th to early 20th century. Many believe that chatelaines were a precursor to the modern day handbag. Châtelains began to lose their popularity when women started to work outside the home towards the beginning of the 20th century.

This is truly an amazing piece of history and art that deserves to be adored. It would look incredible as a centerpiece on a wall in one’s home. It would also make a captivating addition to a silver collection. This is your chance to own a piece of history!
