THREE PIECES WITH CHATELAINES AND SPECTACLES
English, 19th century. Elaborate five-armed chatelaine incorporating medallions and crescent moon forms to the top hook, together with an "800" silver eyeglass case hallmarked for Birmingham circa 1831 with chatelaine chain and hook, and a pair of hallmarked sterling silver spectacles marked "D. E." circa 1826.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
