Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A hand-carved serpentine celt figure of abstract avian form with a blade-form body and a tapered head. Three horizontal notches are carved into the 'head' and represent the eyes and beak of the bird. A suspension hole is drilled laterally through the neck, indicating that this sculpture was perhaps worn as a pendant. Size: 0.84" L x 1.37" W x 4.5" H (2.1 cm x 3.5 cm x 11.4 cm); 5.2" H (13.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private British Columbia, Canada collection, gifted from aunt in Tucson, Arizona, USA, acquired prior to 1994
