Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, 500 BCE to 500 CE. One side of this celt is carved like a narrow axe or celt; the other is carved into a bird head and torso. It has circular eyes and a wide, downturned beak, as well as carved feathers atop its head. Jadeite was one of the most precious materials in pre-Columbian Costa Rica until ca. 700 CE, and was worn as a body ornament. The holes in this piece were for attaching it to the body or clothing. Size: 5-1/4" x 3/4" x 1/4".
Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
