Native American, Southwestern Tohono O'odham (Papago) people, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A massive hand coiled and woven basketry plaque with the "Man-in-the-Maze" pattern- a labyrinth / maze with a figure at the beginning, representing a person's journey through life. The weaving is made from yucca, grasses, and/or other natural plant fibers and traditionally such plaques were made as ceremonial gifts such as for a first kachina dance or wedding, and today are used as artistic and decorative pieces. Size: 21.5" Diameter x 0.5" W (54.6 cm x 1.3 cm)
