Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Akimel O'odham (Pima), ca. 1900s to 1910s CE. A hand-woven basket, coiled from cattail / leaf bundle rods with splints of willow, yucca, and devil's claw. The coiled start in Pima basketry is almost always in black fiber, and the rim is braided. Like other Pueblo cultures, pottery vessels were used as well, and most early woven baskets were either for storage, winnowing trays, or burden baskets, and later more forms appeared for the tourist trade. This is a nice earlier example that may have been used as a winnowing (sifting) basket - used to separate chaff during food preparation. Size: 15.75" L x 4.5" H (40 cm x 11.4 cm)
