An Egyptian polychrome wood figure of Ptah-Sokar-Osiris
Late Period, circa 664-332 B.C.

Provenance:
Gifted ca. 1960s-70s to Elly Georgiadis (born ca.1913-d.1980s) while living in London; and thence by descent to the present owner (photographed ca. 1990 in the Kensington family home).

The text down each long side of the plinth giving an offering formula which mentions 'Cool water which issues from Elephantine'. The owner's name is not recorded.

Condition

The Osiris figure is missing its headdress. There are vertical cracks to the front and back of the body. There is flaking and loss to the polychrome decoration of the body and face including the nose and cheeks. The decoration is better preserved on the base - there is some slight flaking, staining and chipping particularly at the corners and along the bottom edges.

The tenon does not fit the base snugly, which may suggest that the statue and base were not originally made together, though both are ancient.
