A wonderful Coptic (Christian Egyptians) portrait of a man.
Textiles like this one are thought to have been produced by Copts and other weavers throughout the Byzantine Empire.
The people of late antiquity were also buried with these textile garments, and most surviving examples have been found in cemeteries.
This piece retains a stamp mark on the backing from a known dealer in antiquities, Khodary M. El Gary, and is marked 'Cheik Abadi'.
Woven linen and wool
Age unknown. Possibly 3rd-5th century
Measurements
13" x 8.75" textile size, and 16.25" x 11.5" x .25" overall.
Notes
Housed in a mat and glass with paper tape. Has been opened.
