The upper part of an Egyptian wood coffin lid
Ptolemaic Period, circa 4th-3rd Century B.C.

Condition
Front: The coffin mask has stable insect damage on both lappets of the wig, the sides, and most extensively, at the top of the wig where there is loss to the back of the head.
Small amounts of the gesso painted decoration remains, including remnants of the blue wig, and the collar. There are traces of gilded gesso remaining on the face including the ears and corners of the eyes and nose. The features of the face are well preserved although there is some wear to the tip of the nose.
There are some long stable stress cracks in the wood including to the proper left shoulder where a large shallow section has been reattached, measuring approx. 30x10cms.
There is another break and repair around the bottom of the proper right wig lappet and going into the insect damage in that area. The repaired break is in two parts and there are some related large chips in the same area.
There has been some fill to some of the stress cracks including a crack on the wig beneath the proper left cheek.
All of the above is visible in the catalogue illustration.

Back: There is further stable insect damage to the back of the wig with stress cracking to the wood and some white patches of gesso consolidating cracks and previously mentioned repair on the proper right wig lappet.
A section of the proper left shoulder has been repinned at the back, measuring approx. 12x2.5cm.
There is a oval collection label with '086/003 Eg. Late Tyd?'

With overall surface wear including cracking, chipping and flaking. The mask has been affixed to a large metal plate for wall mounting.
