Description

H. G. Wells Signed "Floor Games", Written for his Sons in 1911

H. G. Wells (1866-1946). Floor Games. London: Frank Palmer, [1911]. Signed and inscribed by Wells in the month of its publication on the front free endpaper: "To A. B. Darley / in acknowledgment of a / very pleasant present / very pleasantly given / From H. G. Wells / Xmas 1911". Publisher's blue cloth boards lettered in tan, color halftone view of the author's sons at play mounted to front cover. Cream woven endpapers, all edges trimmed and plain (as issues). Numerous marginal vignettes after J. R. Sinclair, printed in blue, wood-engraved patterns for toy figures on page 36, halftone frontispiece and seven plates; the title and frontispiece slightly worn in the lower margins. Moderate discoloration to the inscription page, with occasional toning and spotting throughout. Extremities slightly rubbed. 6.5" x 8.5", 71pp. Housed in a 7.5" x 9.25" blue Morocco slipcase with gilt titling, blue cloth chemise lining, and a small ex-libris label pasted at interior.

The delightful story of creative play with miniature figures and magical worlds on the nursery floor is brought back to life in this reprint of a historical work. Written for his sons in 1911, Wells's story immerses the reader in a tale where possibilities are the given, and surprises, the fact. It has since been used as a teaching tool for psychotherapists the world over to understand children's methods of thinking. An insightful introduction discusses the history of play in Wells's prolific creative life and his role in the development of sand play therapy.
