Description
Dealer's Lot, 4 Pcs, Incl. Buffalo Bill, Tom Thumb, Burnside & Beecher
A small group of vintage photographs depicting nineteenth-century American entertainment, military, and religious notables, featuring "Buffalo Bill" Cody; General Tom Thumb and Mrs. Tom Thumb; Ambrose Burnside; and Henry Ward Beecher. Expected wear including toning, foxing, and isolated pen and pencil inscriptions from former collectors verso, else very good. The Burnside is accompanied by provenance information from Spink-Smythe. The largest photograph measures 3.375" x 5.875."
The lot includes:
1. A silver gelatin photograph of showman William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917), possibly a Type 1 first generation photograph. Stamped with the date "Jan 24 1917" and copyright serial number, and pencil-inscribed verso. Cody had died just two weeks earlier, on January 10, 1917, so it is possible that this photograph was a press photograph. Minor silvering and edge wear, else near fine. 3.375" x 5.875."
2. A Case & Getchell carte de visite showing traveling performers General Tom Thumb (Charles Stratton) (1838-1883) and Mrs. Tom Thumb (Lavinia Warren) (1841-1919) standing next to a Gothic style chair. The gilt-bordered stock card is printed "Case & Getchell" and "Boston" along the bottom edge recto, and is printed with the backstamp "Carte de Visite / By / Case & Getchell / Photographic Artists / 299 1/2 Washington St. / Boston" verso. Isolated discoloration and adhesive tape residue verso. 2.375" x 4."
3. A carte de visite depicting a bust portrait of Union General Ambrose Burnside (1824-1881). Scattered foxing and flyspecking recto, with cropped top corners.
4. A Brady carte de visite of Congregationalist clergyman Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) mounted on a gilt-edged stock card printed "Brady" along the bottom edge recto. The backstamp verso reads "Brady's / National Photographic / Portrait Galleries / Broadway & Tenth Street / New York / & / No. 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington DC" verso. Surface imperfections at upper right recto. 2.375" x 4."
