Jack Kerouac's personal copy of an issue of "Krittibas" magazine. Calcutta: Sunil Gangopadhyay, ca. July 1963. The 16th issue of the Bengali poetry magazine, edited by Sunil Gangopadhyay. Twelvemo, 123pp. Printed in Bangla, apart from "Allen Ginsberg, From Journals", which contains entries from Ginsberg's journals from November 5, 1962 to January 13, 1963. The cover of the magazine bears a photograph taken by Ginsberg of a young "beggar girl" sheltering under an umbrella. The magazine is stamped on the front free end page with both a Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and the raised blind seal from the Executor of the Estate, John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife. Paper wraps. Light toning throughout. Dampstaining and soiling to the covers. Light wear and bumping to the corners and edges.
Krittibas is a Bengali poetry magazine first published in 1953. It played a highly influential role in the Kolkata literary scene in the decades after Indian independence and provided a platform for young, experimental poets, many of whom went on to become luminaries of modern Bengali poetry.
