Description
Jack Kerouac's Personal Metal Camping Cup Used "On the Road"
A small metal camping cup belonging to Jack Kerouac. Measuring 3.5" x 2.75", manufactured in Japan. The metal is a brassy color, with black plastic covering the handle. Accompanying the cup is a COA from the Executor of Kerouac's Estate, John Shen-Sampas, who was step-son of the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife. Expected wear and scratches to the cup from use. Overall very fine.
During the summer of 1956, Kerouac spent 63 days on Desolation Peak in the Mount Baker National Forest in Whatcom County, serving as a U.S. Forest Service fire lookout. His experiences on the mountain, recorded in his journal, would provide the basis for two of his novels: The Dharma Bums (1958) and Desolation Angels (1960). The cup may have been used at this time, or just as likely, during his mountain-climbing trip in the Sierras with friends - a trip that would inspire The Road (1957).
