Description
[Jack Kerouac] British Revival Poetry Mag "Resuscitator" Dedicated to Jack Kerouac, "with great admiration [for] your writings" - Ex-Jack Kerouac Estate

A copy of the December 1966 issue of "The Resuscitator" with a signed manuscript dedication on the inside of the front cover from John James (1939-2018), the magazine co-founder, editor, and contributor, to American poet Jack Kerouac (1922-1969). James's autograph note signed comprised of 35+ words reads: "14 12 66 / To Jack Kerouac - / This is where we're at. Hope / to take it adventurously / further in the new series! / With affection for what / gleams through of yourself / in, & with great admiration / for, your writings. - / Best - / John James." Editors John James and Nick Wayte, "Resuscitator No. 7" (Bristol, England: Printed by View Publications Ltd., December 1966.) Stamped on one of the front loose endpapers with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and the raised blind seal from the Executor of the Estate, John Sampas, Kerouac's brother-in-law. Expected surface wear including isolated gentle corner rubbing and wrinkles, else clean and near fine, with soft wrappers. 29pp plus a "Notes on the Contributors" section. 5.375" x 8.375."

John James dedicated this copy of "Resuscitator" to Jack Kerouac, who was nearly a generation older, and who belonged to the Beatniks, an influential subgroup of the New American Poetry movement, ca. 1945-1960. James's dedicated copy was retrieved from among the personal belongings of Kerouac's estate.

Jack Kerouac may be better known for his novels, but he was also a talented poet. He released a major poetry collection, "Mexico City Blues," in 1959, and several poetry collections have been published posthumously. Kerouac's interest in Japanese haiku inspired him to develop an Americanized version of the poetic form that he called "Western Haiku." These "haiku pops" were always three lines in length but were not restricted to a set number of syllables. Kerouac described haiku pops as "very simple and free of all poetic trickery… [making] a little picture and yet [being] as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella…"

James was part of the British Poetry Revival movement taking place in 1960s and 1970s United Kingdom. In Bristol in 1963, James had co-founded, alongside fellow British poet Nick Wayte, a quarterly experimental British literary magazine called "The Resuscitator." The December 1966 issue contains contributions from twelve avant-garde British poets including James, whose poem "Bathampton Morrismen at the Rose & Crown" appears on pp. 28-29. James speaks excitedly about a new "Resuscitator" series planned for 1967 in his inscription to Kerouac. The "Resuscitator" folded around February 1969. Kerouac died at age 47 nine months later, in October 1969.
