Frederick Rhodes Sisson (1893-1962). "Still Life with Vase and Apple". Oil on canvas. Signed 'Sisson', lower right. Dimensions: 20" x 24"; framed: 27" x 32". Verso: label with inscription "Gift of Mary Helena Day, 1949". She was the second Principal & Headmistress at the Wheeler School in Providence. Presumably this painting was gifted to the school. This is one of the most intriguing modern compositions in the auction.Frederick Sisson was not only an artist who frequently exhibited at the Providence Art Club, he was also the art critic for the Providence Journal. As a critic he was well schooled in the latest art trends and painting styles and this keen sophistication is evident with his painting. The color selection and range is intriguing. The composition and positioning of objects remarkable. This painting that will entice you every time you walk by it on your wall. Frederick Rhodes Sisson, etcher and landscape painter, was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1893. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and the Academy de la Grande Chaumière, Paris. Sisson also studied privately with Abbott Thayer in New Hampshire from 1920-21. The artist settled back in Providence where he taught art at his alma mater, the Rhode Island School of Design, from 1924 until 1952. During that time he also worked as a critic for the Providence Journal (1932-50). Sisson was a prominent member of the Providence Art Club and the Contemporary Artists of Providence. Upon his retirement in 1952, he moved to Falmouth, Massachusetts where he lived until his death in 1962. ( Williams American Art Galleries)
