Description
Sydney Richmond Burleigh (1853-1929). "Woman at the Spindle", n.d. Watercolor on paper. Signed lower left. Dimensions: 14" x 17"; framed: 21" x 25". Burleigh was a very passionate painter and sought every opportunity to paint intimate domestic scenes capturing a moment in a chore or a worker absorbed in a task. In this scene of an old woman carefully laboring at her spindle, he documents the European country life he would have witnessed when In Paris in the late 1870’s. Burleigh studied in Paris in 1878 along with fellow RI painter Walter Francis Brown. He always kept little sketchbooks where he would draw a pastel or watercolor study that would be later turned into exhibit quality works. Following his first exhibit at Doll and Richards Gallery in Boston in 1881, Burleigh had over fifty exhibitions in his lifetime. He was a beloved member of the Providence Art Club, and the first president of the Providence Watercolor Club. He had a long association with the Rhode Island School of Design serving on the board of directors (1887- 1893), as well as a renowned teacher. In addition, he submitted his work regularly to be shown at the Boston Art Club, the National Academy of Design, the Salmagundi, American Watercolor Club and the New York Watercolor Club.
