Emma Swan is one of the most overlooked 19th Century women artists of the Providence School and mostly due to her overwhelming commercial success selling still life paintings from her studio and fulfilling commissions in her lifetime. Swan learned her drafting skills under her father and set up her independent studio as early as 1870 where she thrived in her artistic professional career. At the founding of the Providence Art Club in 1880, the first club to allow women equal membership, she became a member and was included in the recent 2017 exhibit, "Making her Mark" at the PAC celebrating the 30th anniversary of Women’s History month. Emma Swan is best known for her still life and flower paintings such as the rose painting in this lot. In an article in the Providence Journal the art critic had this praise for her works, “she undoubtedly ranks first among the women artists in Rhode Island and holds an enviable position among leading artists of the country.” (Providence Journal, 1900).
