W. Staples Drown (American, 1856-1915). "Seascape". Medium: oil on canvas. Signed lower left and title on stretcher bar verso. Dimensions: 14" x 20"; framed 18" x 24". Condition: fair with minor paint loss and crazing. Needs restoration but selling "As is". This seascape subject matter is rare for the artist who is best known for his cottage and street scenes of Europe. This work is a fine example of the dexterity of the artist. In his lifetime, Drown was one of the most widely known of New England artists. His artistic reputation was achieved after many years of intense personal study and wide-spread travel in the pursuit of artistic advancement. Much of Drown's art instruction came under the watchful eyes of Appleton Brown, a prominent Boston artist known for his own New England landscapes. Travel to and studies in Europe and the southern United States were a continuous source of refinement and critique throughout his lifetime. Drown achieved acclaim as a member of the Providence art colony and was a leading member of the Ponce De Leon art colony in St. Augustine, Florida. He spent extensive time living & painting in St. Augustine, FL as an active artist member & had studio in Flagler's Ponce de Leon hotel. His studio was next to that of Martin Johnson Heade who bought & displayed a W. Staples Drown work prominently in his private home. This painting is from the Thomas and Teresa Russell collection of overlooked American region artists assembled in the 1970’s.
