Description
This lot contains three works. Walter Feldman: "Study of a Man". Oil on Canvas. Dimensions: 36” x 24”. Unframed. Condition: Good.James Drummond Herbert: Head of a Woman. Oil on paper. Dimensions: 19” x 13”; framed 24” x 20”.Louise Marianetti: Woman's Face. Charcoal and Conti crayon, on paper. Matted. Dimensions: 12" x 10". Portraiture dates back to the Egyptians and its role in society evolved over the centuries. First, portraiture served as documentation of individuals before photography. Then, in early Colonial times the more affluent classes were among the few who could afford to have their portraits painted and it became a sign of the status and importance. The three artists in this offering Feldman, Herbert and Marianetti, all felt it important to master portraiture as a measure of their artistic professionalism. However, they were more at liberty to explore the inner psyche of their sitter, more so than their facial features or expressions. Portraiture emerged as an exploration into human psychology, with artists such as Matisse and Picasso playing with color, line, and form like never before. This collection of portrait studies covers the Realistic traditions. Feldman showing his command of realism especially noting the watch on the shirtless man. Herbert his facile brushwork with a dramatic head, Marianetti – executes one of her exacting renderings from the Art Students League studio class with a twist of whimsy. Her charcoal and white crayon works pay homage to fellow Art Student League students such as Paul Cadmus who were celebrated for their fine drawing techniques in charcoal, pencil and pastel.
