James Drummond Herbert (American, 1896-1970). "Girl with a White Rose", circa 1924. Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Estate stamp and National Academy of Design exhibition label. Unframed. Dimensions: 20" x 16". The portrait is considered one of the highest art forms and this portrait by Herbert demonstrates his mastery of the subject matter. Fortunate American painters of his day went to Paris to complement their American art training. Paris was where he would refine his skills and the result is this striking portrait of a young girl with a prominent white rose on her dress, the symbol of youth, innocence, and purity. This painting was selected for exhibition at the National Academy of Design in NYC (probably in 1926 or 1927), a distinct honor for the young artist. Herbert enjoyed a successful career and exhibited in many important art venues, including the Salon d’Auton in Paris, Kraushaar Gallery in NYC, Chicago Art Institute, National Academy of Design, Society of Illustrators, Newport Art Museum, and the Providence Art Club. Herbert was a highly educated and privileged artist born in New York City, who lived in Manhattan and studied at Columbia University during his youth. He attended the Art Students League of New York from 1920-1923, and again from 1926-1929. He became a member of the Society of Illustrators and went on to do commercial work for advertisers and fashion magazine. He later relocated in 1947 to Providence, RI to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design and become a member of the Providence Art Club and Newport Art Association.
