Description
H. Anthony Dyer (American, 1872-1943). "Italian Stone Doorway". Gouache watercolor on paper, mounted on board. Signed lower right. Dimensions: 7" x 9.5". Housed in original frame: 9.75" x 12.75".Few RI artists enjoyed the popularity & patronage that Dyer did in his lifetime and since. Preferring the "old-style English method of watercolor painting", Dyer was adept at using gouache & transparent washes on grey/earth toned sheets. His yearly travels brought popular European vistas back to his patrons. "For him the doorways of the Old World open up illimitable vistas of loveliness" (W. Alden Brown). On one of his summer sojourns to Italy, Dyer executed this intimate scene of a stone cottage with its doorway open and giving a glimpse into the family’s cozy accommodation. It is in the original frame. The work is from the collection of Dante Russillo and Claudia Beach who passionately collected Providence School artists of merit in the 1980’s.
