Housed in beautiful frame.A frequent exhibitor at the Providence Art Club, Frank Marshall was an artist who bridged two centuries and two art worlds, that of a fine arts painter and that of a newspaper illustrator in the tradition of American artist John Sloan. He has five works in the Providence Art Club collection including a similar landscape to this painting. Frank Marshall was a landscape painter, silversmith and goldsmith. He was active in Providence, Rhode Island; Cape Ann and Gloucester, Massachusetts; and Boothbay Harbor, Maine where he spent his summers. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1880s, and in Paris in 1885 at the Academy Julian. In Providence, he was a member of the Providence Art Club and the Providence Water Color Club, and in Boothbay Harbor, he was one of the founders of the Commonwealth Colony of Art.Marshall was an illustrator for the "Providence Journal" from 1897 to 1923 and for 20 years, taught at the Rhode Island School of Design. Equally accomplished as a painter his works are in the Providence Art Club and RISD Museum of Art. He exhibited with the Boston Art Club and the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts.
