Oil on Canvas: 12” x 14”. Condition: Fair with some paint loss & crazing.This small work is attributed to George Whitaker. It was in the collection of Thomas and Teresa Russell who assembled their collection in the 1970’s with a specific focus on George Whitaker. The framing is the same as other Whitaker works in their collection and the style in keeping with the Barbizon mood. After study with his first art instructor George Inness, George Whitaker sought further art instruction abroad with the natural landscape painters in the Barbizon forest. When he returned to Providence to set up his art studio, he joined many kindred painting colleagues who sought spiritual inspiration from the American landscape such as the African-American painter Edward Bannister winner of the 1876 Medal from the Centennial Exposition. ,He became one of the founders of the Providence Art Club, a careful observer of developments in American painting and promoter of the capital city painters. Whitaker established himself as a prominent painter in Providence earning the accolade of the “Dean of Rhode Island Artists’.
