James D. Herbert (American, 1896 – 1970). This lot consists of two works by Herbert."Cowboy’s Corner," circa 1947. Watercolor. Estate stamp, lower right. Signed, title & date in pencil, verso. Dimensions: 13 ¾” x 10 3/4". "Western", circa 1920”s. Charcoal on paper. Initialed, title & date verso. Dimensions: 12.5” x 18.75”.The Western Series by James Herbert is evidence of his fluid water color style and charcoal study. Herbert traversed the fine art world with his dramatic theatrical sets to the world of illustration. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators and received several advertising commissions along with the Butterick Pattern Book commission. During WWII he headed the Design Department for the War Posters. These two Western works were preparatory works for an illustration commission. James Herbert was a highly educated and privileged artist born in New York City, who lived in Manhattan and studied at Columbia University during his youth. He attended the Art Students League of New York from 1920-1923, and again from 1926-1929. He became a member of the Society of Illustrators and went on to do commercial work for advertisers and fashion magazine. He later relocated in 1947 to Providence, RI to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design and become a member of the Providence Art Club and Newport Art Association.
