Sims pursued his painting as an advocation while he worked in the Engineering Department at Brown University in the 1920’s. He was a member of the Providence Art Club and exhibited in two one man shows in 1921 and 1928 The appeal of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay for artists is seen across generations. For Sims, taking a skiff out off the shoreline and painting the rocky coast was a weekend joy. In this image we see his skiff on the shore and other boating enthusiasts sailing in 1916. Sims was well known among fellow Providence School artists and made the cut to be included in the much sought after Angell’s Lane by George Miner published in 1948 as the first documentation of the history of early Providence School Painters and the founding of the Providence Art Club. Angell’s Lane is the bible of Providence School collectors to document early artists such as Sims and their painting career.
