Description
Sicily. Abacaenum. AR Litra (0.53g), ca. 450 BC. Bertino 12.1; Campana 2. Attractively toned. Well centered and struck. Flan crack and traces of overstriking on reverse. Amazing crude style! Good very fine. Acquired privately from Arnumis (Anne Demeester), Brussels.
The boar was widespread throughout ancient Greece; its ferociousness, destructiveness and strength made it a worthy opponent for hunters and heroes. Fear of these beasts resulted in legends arising to explain the purpose and nature of their being: they were indeed sent by certain gods to punish the human race! Artists were naturally attracted to its muscular build, pliant skin, bristly mane, and particularly fierce countenance. Its image thus often appeared on coins, gems, vases and reliefs.
