"I am an old man but I drink more than the youngsters; and if I have to dance, I shall imitate Silenus and dance in the middle of the ring with my wine-flask..." (The Anacreontea 47). In Greek mythology, Silenus was a companion and tutor to the wine god Dionysus. He is described as the oldest and wisest of the followers of Dionysus, and is said in Orphic hymns to be the young god's tutor. A notorious consumer of wine, he was said to possess special knowledge and the power of prophecy when intoxicated... He is often represented as a jovial old man, hairy and balding, with a pot-belly, snub-nose, and large pointed ears.
