Description
Sicily. Catana. AR Litra, obverse die attributed to the Master Procles (0.76g), 415-405 BC. Boehringer Li.6; MAST 2.36 (this coin). Old cabinet tone. Well centered and struck. Pitting on reverse. Lovely classical style! Good very fine. Tradart 1991 (1) lot 37; Gerhard Hirsch 1986 (150) lot 38.
The fifth century Catana dies display some of the finest classical style engraving in Greek numismatics. Parallels in style between issues of Catana in this period and contemporary signed issues from other mints have led some numismatists to attribute many dies to famous artists such as Euainetos. Some litrae dies are signed with the first initial of the artist Procles, whose full signature is present on tetradrachms. This unsigned coin are of an identical style, however, suggesting also his work, but perhaps before he began engraving his signature.
