Description
Sicily. Catana. AR Litra, unsigned work of the Brussels Master (0.72g), 460-450 BC. Boehringer Li.2; Rizzo 9.16. Very rare. Attractively toned. Well centered and struck. Exceptional for issue, a lovely fraction! Choice extremely fine. Acquired privately from Tradart, Brussels.
The superb head of Silenus on this fraction must have been made just a few years after the famous tetradrachms of Naxus and Aetna. The rather powerful style of this coin, with echos of the late archaic, should be compared to the following litra from Catana, which shows a much more human head of Silenus, fully classical in concept.
