Description
Sicily. Catana. AR Litra, unsigned work of the Brussels Master (0,67g), 460-450 BC. Boehringer Li.1; Rizzo 9.11. Very rare. Attractively toned. Well centered and struck. A fraction of great beauty and elegance, one of the finest known! Choice extremely fine. Acquired privately from Tradart, Brussels; Gorny & Mosch 2007 (155) lot 21.
We do not know the name of this talented master, simply called the Brussels Master, but modern judgment holds him in the highest esteem (Callatay & Gitler). Ancient Greek literary sources fail to mention the name of a single die-engraver. They probably were very skilled professionals, who were in great demand. Since at this time mints were not regularly active, issuing coins only when needed, it may be assumed that these artists had to work for a variety of employers.
