Description
Sicily. Syracuse. Hiero II. AV 60 Litrae (4.26g), 220-217 BC. Fitzwilliam 402; MAST 2.52 (this coin). Lightly toned with underlying luster. Well centered and struck. A beautiful coin! Choice extremely fine. Acquired privately from Tradart, Brussels.
Former general of Pyrrhus and an important figure of the first Punic war, Hiero was tyrant of Syracuse from 270 to 215 BC and the illegitimate son of Heliocles, a Syracusan noble who claimed descent from Gelon! Machiavelli (The Prince 6) cites Hiero as an exceptionally virtuous man and a rare example of someone who rose to princely power from previously being a private individual, comparing him to Moses, Cyrus, Theseus, and Romulus!
