Description
Sicily. Leontini. AR Tetradrachm, work of the Maestro della foglia (17.27g), ca. 430 BC. AMB 353; Boehringer 55. Attractively toned. Well centered and struck from particularly elegant dies. Typical die break at a very early state on obverse. Insignificant traces of overstriking on reverse. A splendid example! Choice extremely fine. Acquired privately from Tradart, Brussels; 1984 Leontini hoard (CH 8.166).
This beautiful tetradrachm is the work of the Maestro della foglia, dubbed thus, after Rizzo, for his habit of signing his dies with a laurel leaf on reverse, instead of the usual initials or name. This laurel leaf design is coherent with the image of Apollo on obverse as discoverer of the healing effects of plants, a quality which the god shared with Esculapius, according to the great Pythagoras, as Pliny the Elder (25.13) informs us.
