Description
Bruttium. Rhegium. AR Tetradrachm (17.29g), ca. 400 BC. Arethuse 1924 (1) lot 112 = Herzfelder 96b (this coin). Old cabinet tone. Well centered and struck. A splendid coin! Good very fine. Jean Elsen 2018 (138) lot 24; Alfred Blondel (b. 1926) collection; Jean Elsen 2007 (93) lot 55; Robert Sussmeyer (1938-2022) collection; Numismatic Fine Arts 1988 (20) lot 618; Munzen und Medaillen 1982 (61) lot 31; Sotheby & Co 1970 (22 April) lot 42; Eugene Aubry-Vitet (1845-1930) collection; with Louis Ciani (1894-1929), Paris.
The late coinage of Rhegium is really impressive in its compact monumentality, with well designed and carefully made flan-filling types. The high relief lion's head on obverse is magnificent while the head of Apollo is a perfect image of a young idealized aristocrat. The classical ideal of beauty reaches here its most accomplished results!
