King William IV Signed Pay Order For Lieutenant's Leave

King William IV signed pay document. 1p, measuring 8" x 12.75", Brighton, England, dated December 14, 1832. Signed "William R." in large script at the top left corner as King and countersigned by "John Hobhouse", 1st Baron Broughton. Addressed to the Right Honorable Paymaster General, directing them to reduce Lt. John Vereker from Full Pay to Half Pay while on 4.5 months leave. With flattened folds and small separations starting at the edges. Edge toning and minor soiling throughout. Contemporary ink blot at the end of William's signature. Bold and large signature, very attractive.

In part:
"Whereas, We have thought fit to five leave unto Lieutenant John Vereker on Full Pay in our 55 Regiment of Foot to exchange with Lieutenant Edward Fairfield on the Half Pay of the 27 Regiment of Foot…We do hereby authorize and direct…you do pay unto the said John Vereker the sum of two shillings & four pence a day for his Half Pay as a reduced Lieutenant in the room of the said Edward Fairfield from the 13 November 1832, to the 31st March 1833…"

William IV (1765-1837) never expected to be king. He was the third son of George III and only ascended the throne in 1830 after the death of his two older brothers. During his 7-year-long reign, William IV enacted many reforms and was much more conscientious than his hedonistic brother George IV. After his death, the crown passed to his niece, Victoria (1819-1901).
