Description
Anonymous, half plate of Burritt (1810-1879) and a group of friends. Burritt, posed here in the center of the group, might not be a household name today, but in mid-19th century New England, he was a well-known abolitionist and promoter of temperance and world peace. Burritt was a founder of the League of Universal Brotherhood in 1846, and prior to the Civil War was an advocate of "compensated emancipation." He was appointed U.S. consul to Birmingham (England) by Lincoln in 1864, a position he held until 1868. He died in New Britain, Connecticut in 1879.
