Description
Quarter-plate daguerreotype of a young girl, identified as Mary Hemsley, and her wax-head doll. The mat is stamped "Chase" in the lower right. Mary poses regally in a tufted chair, the fabric tinted a delicate blue, accentuating her elegant, ruffled dress of rose-colored satin. We assume this is the work of Lorenzo G. Chase of Boston (active 1844-1855), who in 1849 advertised he had taken 40,000 images. A stunning image.
