Description
Anonymous, ninth-plate portrait of a well-dressed young African American woman, ca. 1850-55. Pinned to the pad is a manuscript identifying the sitter as "Muriella Williams. Salisbury, (N? CT?)." Despite the positive identification, a search of the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census utilizing various spellings ("Muriella, Mariella, Mary Ellen, Marella") and locations (Salisbury, North Carolina, Connecticut, Maryland, and Massachusetts) failed to locate a person of this name. Searches of later years found tentative matches, but none definitive. A great image for those with a serious genealogical bent!
