Description
Daguerreotype of a gentleman identified as Abner Rice Hallowell (1805-1879) of Bangor, Maine, in a rare folding daguerreotype viewing case invented and patented in 1855 by John Stull of Philadelphia. The leather case has a gold imprint of an American eagle, with floral graphics and patentee information embossed on the front and back. It is accompanied by family notes identifying the sitter and including the following:
This stereo daguerreotype of father was taken in Philadelphia in 1855-6 when he was the Maine representative in the formation of the Republican Party in that city. He was 50-51 years of age.
A further note reads: When Emily Hallowell .... has no further use for this it is to Henry Carleton Hallowell in Hayward, Mass. Blanche G Hallowell, Aug 13, 1942.

Condition
The case is in good condition. The metal sides are intact, but slightly bent. The dags have been cleaned and currently have spots. They probably can be improved with proper conservation.
