Item Details
Description
Dramatic, theatrically-posed quarter plate of three women with applied color and gilding, the brass mat stamped "Chase" on the lower right. While Craig notes several daguerrieans with the surname Chase, we assume this image to have been taken by Lorenzo G. Chase of Boston. The image depicts two young women with long, flowing hair flanking an older woman; one holds a fan, the other, a well-thumbed book. The woman at the left looks on adoringly at the center figure, while her sister (?) gazes at the camera with a look of boredom. The subjects are dressed in clothing typical of American women of the 1850s. The two younger woman have a distinctly non-Caucasian appearance. Chase was known to have taken daguerreotypes of foreign visitors to Boston, several of which were collected by Harvard Professor Louis Agassiz and curated as part of the Peabody Museum at that institution. An intriguing image!
