Description
An Abelam bark panel, Abelam people, Maprik hills, East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea. The rectangular panel made of two large pieces of bark (possibly on full sheet that split while being prepared) attached to a framework keeping it straight and flat. The surface painted with curvilinear abstracted forms in black, white and yellow on a red field. The Abelam produced elaborate displays for their mens houses during the culmination of their initiatory cycles. The entire ceiling and parts of the walls were covered in painted bark panels such as this along with a multitude of similarly painted wooden sculptures. Due to the fragility of these bark panels they are scarce.Acquired by Marc Seidler from Lynda Cunningham, C. 1980. This panel measures 54.25 inches tall x 25.5 inches wide.
