Description
A Southern Highlands Bark Belt. Waghi Valley, Southern Province, Papua New Guinea.Of typical form, the wide bark belt completely covered within sized geometric designs consisting of triangular forms and chevrons. Remains of some red and white infill. While bark belts were worn in many parts of Papua New Guinea and were often elaborately decorated, they served a function of protecting the lower abdomen during skirmishes or open battles. The particular designs of this type of bark belt may be related to the patterning seen on shields in the area as well.Acquired by Marc Seidler in the Highlands. In the round the belt measures 10.5 inches across x 7 inches tall..
