Item Details
Description
A very rare and monumental carved wooden panel from the Mimika (also known as the Kamoro / neighbors to the Asmat)South Coast of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. This panel was Field collected by Mr Todd Barlin. At the time Todd went in to this remote region of jungle, no one except a few missionaries had been there since an expedition in the 1940's. This was one of the first pieces brought out. It was field collected in the early 80's when it was still a 'closed' region according to the Irian Government.Traditionally such panels were placed into the ground during annual memorials for villagers who had recently died and even more fascinating is that they were displayed before headhunting and revenge killings, as well as feasts. The panel measures 78 x 7 inches.
