Description
Objects of this type are very rare. They seem to have been used in shrines to venerate ancestors or cultural heroes. The use of Fern Tree figures in west New Guinea is not well documented and only a few field collectors were able to bring out full sized images from shrines after West Irian opened to outsiders. The figure measures 35 x 20 inches. Provenance: Field collected by Todd Barlin between Humboldt Bay and Lake Sentani and sold through New York Gallery Graven Images in the 1980's. ** Less than a dozen examples are known to exist on the market.
