Description
Fine Massim drum, Trobriand Island group; Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. Of classical elongated form, the drum carved form characteristic hardwood, the body narrow with a thing rib with raised handle decorated with typical design motifs with white infill. The original tympanum intact. Drums of this type were referred to as katunenia and were used in ritual dances. The body of the drum is made from the dense brown hardwood common to most massim carvings. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1980s from Lynda Cunningham. The Drum Measures 27 inches tall.
